Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) are an investigational therapeutic agent being evaluated by the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, for the treatment of osteosarcoma. The therapy involves the intratumoral injection of SPIONs followed by the application of a Spinning Magnetic Field (SMF), used in combination with conventional neoadjuvant chemotherapy. This approach aims to enhance the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy and induce localized physical stress (such as magnetic hyperthermia or mechanical disruption) within the tumor. The goal of this strategy is to achieve significant tumor shrinkage and improve the feasibility of limb-salvage surgery in pediatric and adolescent patients with primary malignant bone tumors.
