Overview

The Supraseasonal Universal Influenza Vaccine (SUIV), also identified by the code GSK3816302A, is an investigational inactivated biologic vaccine developed by GSK. It utilizes chimeric hemagglutinin (cHA) technology licensed from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, combined with GSK's proprietary AS03 or AS01 adjuvants. The vaccine is designed to elicit broad, cross-reactive immunity by targeting the conserved stalk domain of influenza A hemagglutinin (both group 1 and group 2), rather than the highly variable head domain targeted by traditional seasonal vaccines. This 'supraseasonal' approach aims to provide durable, strain-agnostic protection that would eliminate the need for annual vaccine reformulation. The candidate was evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT03275389) in healthy adults, but GSK discontinued development after interim data indicated that the boosting effect of the second dose was weaker than expected and immunological persistence was insufficient to confirm long-term protection.
