Surabgene lomparvovec (ABBV-RGX-314) is an investigational AAV8-based gene therapy developed by AbbVie in collaboration with REGENXBIO for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic retinopathy. It utilizes the NAV AAV8 vector to deliver a transgene encoding a soluble anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody fragment (Fab). Following a single subretinal or suprachoroidal administration, the therapy is designed to turn retinal cells into biofactories that continuously produce the anti-VEGF protein, potentially eliminating the need for frequent intravitreal injections of standard-of-care anti-VEGF agents. The program is currently in Phase 3 clinical development for nAMD, with the goal of providing a durable, one-time treatment option that maintains vision and reduces treatment burden.
