Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SurBred is a sublingual tablet formulation of sufentanil citrate, a highly potent synthetic opioid analgesic. Developed for the management of moderate-to-severe acute pain in a medically supervised setting, it utilizes a specialized delivery system to administer the drug via the oral mucosa. Sufentanil acts as a selective agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, providing analgesic effects significantly more potent than fentanyl or morphine. By utilizing the sublingual route, SurBred achieves rapid systemic absorption and avoids first-pass hepatic metabolism, offering a non-invasive alternative to intravenous opioid administration. The product was originally developed by AcelRx Pharmaceuticals (now Talphera) and is licensed to Yichang Humanwell Pharmaceutical for the Chinese market.
