Overview

This drug is a combination formulation of exogenous pulmonary surfactant and vitamin A. Surfactants are lipid-protein complexes that reduce surface tension in the lungs, improving ventilation-perfusion ratio and lung compliance, primarily used to treat respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants. Vitamin A (retinol or its derivatives) is an antioxidant essential for lung development and repair; intramuscular administration reduces the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The combination aims to deliver vitamin A directly with surfactant as a lipophilic vehicle via intratracheal administration, potentially providing a less invasive method than injections while maintaining surfactant's surface activity. Preclinical studies show that certain forms of vitamin A (e.g., retinyl acetate) can be miscible with surfactant preparations without significantly impairing their surface tension-lowering properties. Animal models demonstrate systemic bioavailability of vitamin A after intratracheal delivery with surfactant without compromising lung function improvements from surfactant therapy.
