Surgicept

Surgicept is a waterless, alcohol-based topical antiseptic solution designed for use as a surgical hand scrub and healthcare personnel handwash. Developed by Healthpoint and later distributed by CareFusion, the formulation contains 70% ethyl alcohol as the primary active ingredient, supplemented by preservative levels of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and benzalkonium chloride (BZK) in a synergistic combination with ethylhexylglycerin. It is intended to significantly reduce microorganisms on the hands and forearms prior to surgery or patient care, demonstrating rapid bactericidal activity with a 99.99% kill rate within 15 seconds in vitro. The product was originally invented by Dr. Shanta M. Modak at Columbia University Medical Center and meets FDA requirements for surgical hand scrubs.
