Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Surgiflo is a topical absorbable hemostatic agent used as an adjunct to hemostasis in surgical procedures when conventional methods (such as ligature or pressure) are ineffective or impractical. It consists of a flowable gelatin matrix made from porcine gelatin, which can be mixed with sterile saline or thrombin solution. When applied to bleeding surfaces, the matrix provides a scaffold for platelet adherence and aggregation, accelerating the formation of a platelet plug and aiding in fibrin clot formation. The product is fully absorbed within 4–6 weeks after application. Its primary mechanism is mechanical tamponade and facilitation of the body's natural coagulation cascade[1][6][7][8]. Developed for use in various types of surgery (except ophthalmic), it is not intended for intravascular use or closure of skin incisions due to risk of complications such as embolization or interference with wound healing[6].
