SURGIFLO Hemostatic Matrix is a flowable, porcine-derived gelatin hemostat developed by Ethicon (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson MedTech). It is indicated for use in surgical procedures (except ophthalmic) as an adjunct to hemostasis when control of bleeding by ligature or other conventional methods is ineffective or impractical. The product consists of a pre-filled syringe of porcine gelatin matrix that is typically mixed with either sterile saline or a thrombin solution (often human-derived) to create a flowable paste. Its mechanism of action is primarily physical; the gelatin matrix provides a scaffold that promotes platelet adherence and aggregation, while the optional thrombin component actively converts the patient's endogenous fibrinogen into fibrin, thereby accelerating the natural coagulation cascade and the formation of a stable clot.
