Surgispon

Surgispon is a sterile, absorbable hemostatic medical device composed of pharmaceutical-grade gelatin (lyophilized hydrolyzed collagen). Manufactured by Aegis Lifesciences, it is available in sponge and powder forms. The device functions by providing a porous matrix that, upon contact with blood, activates thrombocytes and triggers platelet aggregation. This physical structure promotes the formation of thrombin and a stable fibrin clot, effectively achieving hemostasis in various surgical settings, including capillary, venous, and arteriolar bleeding. It is particularly noted for its utility in patients on anticoagulant therapy, such as warfarin. Surgispon is typically absorbed within 3 to 4 weeks of implantation without leaving residue or causing encapsulation.
