Surv.m-CRA-1 is an investigational oncolytic conditionally replicative adenovirus (CRA) designed for the selective treatment of various malignant tumors. The virus is engineered such that its replication is strictly controlled by the survivin (BIRC5) promoter, which is highly active in a broad spectrum of cancer cells but remains largely inactive in normal differentiated adult tissues. This tumor-specific promoter drives the expression of essential viral genes, such as E1A, allowing the virus to selectively replicate within and induce lysis of survivin-positive cancer cells while sparing healthy surrounding tissue. Developed by researchers at Kagoshima University, Surv.m-CRA-1 has demonstrated potent anti-tumor activity in preclinical models and is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for refractory solid tumors and pancreatic cancer. The "m" designation typically refers to specific modifications in the viral genome intended to enhance its safety profile and therapeutic index compared to earlier iterations.
