Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SurVeil is a drug-coated balloon (DCB) medical device designed for percutaneous transluminal angioplasty of peripheral arteries, specifically targeting de novo or restenotic lesions in the femoral and popliteal arteries. The device features a proprietary microcrystalline coating that delivers paclitaxel (2.0 μg/mm²) as the active pharmaceutical ingredient, with polyethyleneimine as an excipient. Paclitaxel acts by inhibiting neointimal hyperplasia through its antiproliferative effects on vascular smooth muscle cells, thereby reducing restenosis after angioplasty. The innovative coating technology aims to provide uniform drug distribution and minimize downstream particulates. Developed and manufactured by Surmodics, the device is marketed worldwide by Abbott following FDA approval in 2023 and CE Mark certification in 2020[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
