Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sustol (APF530) is an extended-release formulation of the 5-HT3 receptor antagonist granisetron, developed by Heron Therapeutics. It utilizes a proprietary Biochronomer polymer-based drug delivery technology, which consists of a bioerodible tri(ethylene glycol) poly(orthoester) polymer. This technology allows for the sustained release of granisetron, maintaining therapeutic drug levels for at least five days following a single subcutaneous injection. Sustol is specifically indicated for use in combination with other antiemetics in adults for the prevention of acute and delayed chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC) or anthracycline and cyclophosphamide (AC) combination chemotherapy regimens. By providing extended coverage, it addresses the clinical challenge of delayed-onset emesis, which is often poorly controlled by conventional, short-acting 5-HT3 receptor antagonists.
