It is primarily indicated for the relief of cough and phlegm associated with the common cold in children. The product is most commonly available as a syrup (Xiaoer Zhike Tangjiang) or granules (Xiaoer Zhike Keli). Its formulation combines Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) extracts with chemical expectorants; the active ingredients typically include licorice fluid extract, platycodon fluid extract, orange peel tincture, and ammonium chloride. The drug works through a dual mechanism: ammonium chloride acts as an expectorant by irritating the gastric mucosa to reflexively increase respiratory tract secretions, while the herbal components provide soothing antitussive and anti-inflammatory effects on the respiratory tract.
