Overview

Sutherlandia frutescens, commonly known as "Cancer Bush" or "Kankerbos," is a medicinal plant native to Southern Africa with a long history of use in traditional medicine. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including L-canavanine, pinitol, GABA, and various flavonoids. Research indicates that the plant possesses neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In preclinical studies, such as those using rotenone-induced rat models, Sutherlandia frutescens has shown potential in mitigating motor deficits and activating hippocampal neuronal activity, suggesting a possible role in the management of Parkinson's disease. It has also been clinically investigated for its safety and efficacy in patients with HIV/AIDS and type 2 diabetes.
