Sutilain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from Bacillus subtilis, classified as a member of the keratase family. It was developed by Abbott and approved by the FDA in 1969 for use as a topical enzymatic debriding agent. Sutilain acts by dissolving necrotic tissue and hyaluronidase, facilitating biochemical debridement of second- and third-degree burns, incisional wounds, traumatic wounds, pyrogenic wounds, decubiti (pressure ulcers), and other similar lesions. The enzyme rapidly breaks down the intercellular matrix to aid desquamation but is less effective at removing deep dermal elements or necrotic fat. Sutilain was marketed under the brand name Travase but has since been discontinued due to concerns such as increased risk of wound infections associated with its use in moist environments[2][5][7][8].
