Suxiao Jiuxin Pills

Suxiao Jiuxin Pills is a traditional Chinese medicine formulation widely used in China for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris and coronary heart disease. Developed in the 1980s by Chenggui Zhang, it is composed primarily of two herbal ingredients: Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Chuanxiong) and Borneolum syntheticum (Borneol). The main active constituents include phthalides (such as senkyunolide A), phenolic acids (ferulic acid), alkaloids (ligustrazine/tetramethylpyrazine), and borneol. Mechanistically, these compounds exert vasodilatory effects by relaxing vascular smooth muscle—likely through modulation of calcium channels and potassium channels—and improving myocardial blood supply. The pill has demonstrated efficacy in relieving angina symptoms rapidly without significant side effects and may also improve microcirculation, reduce inflammation, support endothelial function, inhibit arrhythmias via potassium channel blockade (notably hKv1.5), and provide cardioprotective effects against ischemia-reperfusion injury[1][2][3][6][7]. It is included on China's national essential drug list for cardiocerebral vascular diseases.
