Overview

Suxibuzone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) synthetically derived from pyrazolone and used primarily in veterinary medicine, especially for horses. It acts as a prodrug of phenylbutazone, meaning it is metabolized in the body to produce phenylbutazone and oxyphenbutazone, which are responsible for its therapeutic effects. Suxibuzone exhibits anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic properties with relatively low ulcerogenic potential. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX), the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the synthesis of prostaglandins, prostacyclines, and thromboxanes from arachidonic acid. This leads to reduced biosynthesis of prostaglandins—key mediators in pain and inflammation—and also inhibits platelet aggregation. Suxibuzone is mainly indicated for pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis, bursitis, laminitis, and soft tissue inflammation in horses[1][3][4][5][6].
