SVF-COV is an autologous cell therapy developed by Orgenesis Inc. for the treatment of COVID-19-related Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The therapy utilizes stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells, which are a heterogeneous population of stromal and vascular cells isolated from a patient's own adipose (fat) tissue. The isolation process is performed at the point of care using the Tissue Genesis Icellator2 device. Once isolated, the SVF cells are administered intravenously to the patient. The therapy is intended to work through multiple mechanisms, including the stabilization of microcirculation to improve oxygenation, the maintenance of T and B lymphocytes to support antibody production, and the induction of anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects to repair damaged lung tissue. In May 2021, the FDA granted Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval for a first-in-human feasibility study of SVF-COV in patients with severe COVID-19.
