Overview

Swertia japonica whole flowering, commonly known as senburi, is a botanical extract derived from the whole flowering plant of *Swertia japonica*. It is traditionally used in Japanese medicine to treat various gastrointestinal conditions, including nausea, gastroparesis, and gastric atony. The extract contains several bitter-tasting secoiridoid glycosides, such as swertiamarin, sweroside, amarogentin, amaroswerin, and gentiopicroside. Its therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to the stimulation of gastric emptying and gastrointestinal motility through the inhibition of dopamine D2 receptors. While it is not an FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug, it is marketed in over-the-counter products like Molyhen and is also utilized in cosmetic formulations for its potential biological activities.
