Overview

SXN102308 is an investigational recombinant botulinum neurotoxin serotype E (rBoNT/E) developed by Ipsen. Unlike the more common botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A), which has a slow onset and long duration of action (typically 3–4 months), SXN102308 is characterized by a fast onset of action (within 24 hours) and a significantly shorter duration of effect (approximately 2–4 weeks). The drug works by cleaving the synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25) at a specific site, which prevents the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane and inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, leading to temporary muscle paralysis. SXN102308 is being explored for both therapeutic indications, such as spasticity and acute pain management, and aesthetic applications, such as the temporary improvement of glabellar lines, where a rapid onset or short-term effect is clinically desirable.
