SYD-101 is a proprietary, stabilized low-dose atropine sulfate ophthalmic solution developed to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in pediatric patients. It is formulated as a 0.01% (and potentially also 0.03%) preservative-containing multi-dose eye drop designed for once-daily use at bedtime in children aged 3 to 14 years[2][5][7]. Atropine is an antimuscarinic agent that acts by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the eye, thereby reducing axial elongation and slowing myopic progression[5]. Unlike compounded formulations, SYD-101 offers improved stability and consistency, addressing previous concerns about variability and efficacy with non-standardized preparations[2]. The drug has completed pivotal Phase 3 trials (STAR study), meeting its primary endpoint of reducing annual myopia progression over three years[4][6]. If approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA or EMA, it would be the first pharmaceutical therapy specifically indicated for slowing pediatric myopia progression.
