Overview

SYL1601 is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapeutic candidate developed by Sylentis (a subsidiary of PharmaMar) for the treatment of inflammatory ocular conditions, most notably dry eye disease. The drug functions through the RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism, specifically targeting the messenger RNA (mRNA) of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor 1 (TNFR1). By promoting the degradation of TNFR1 mRNA, SYL1601 reduces the density of TNFR1 receptors on the ocular surface, thereby inhibiting the pro-inflammatory signaling cascade initiated by Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). This targeted approach aims to alleviate the symptoms of pain and inflammation associated with chronic dry eye without the systemic side effects often seen with broader anti-inflammatory agents.
