Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Symbioflor Bronchoprotect is an over-the-counter (OTC) probiotic medicine developed and manufactured by Max Zeller Söhne AG. [1] It is classified as an immunostimulant, containing a bacterial concentrate of live Enterococcus faecalis (strain DSM 16440). [1, 2, 8] The product is indicated for reducing the recurrence rate of infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, particularly sinusitis and bronchitis. [1, 2, 3] It functions by modulating the body's immune system; the bacteria are thought to 'train' the immune cells located in the gut, which constitute a significant portion of the body's immune system. [1, 4] This stimulation leads to the production of antibodies that are then transported to the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, enhancing their defensive capabilities against pathogens. [1] Symbioflor Bronchoprotect is administered as oral drops. [2]
