Symbios OsteoShield is a biocompatible, resorbable dental membrane composed of Type I collagen derived from bovine Achilles tendon. Developed and manufactured by Dentsply Sirona, it is specifically designed for use in guided bone regeneration (GBR) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures. The membrane serves as a temporary physical barrier that prevents the rapid ingrowth of epithelial and connective tissue cells into a bone defect, thereby providing a protected environment for slower-growing osteogenic cells to repopulate the site and facilitate bone formation. It is commonly used in alveolar ridge preservation following tooth extraction, either as a standalone barrier or in combination with bone grafting materials. The membrane is designed to be resorbed by the body over a period of several months, eliminating the need for a second surgical procedure for removal.
