Symphytum herb extract is a topical botanical preparation derived from a specifically cultivated variety of comfrey (Symphytum x uplandicum Nyman 'Harras') that is devoid of detectable toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Developed by HARRAS Pharma Curarina, the extract is formulated as a 10% cream (marketed under the brand name Traumaplant) containing a 2.5:1 aqueous-ethanolic pressed concentrate of freshly harvested comfrey herb. It is indicated for wound healing impairment, including superficial skin abrasions, wounds, and pressure sores, as well as blunt traumas, muscle pain, and joint complaints. The therapeutic effects are attributed to its multi-component phytochemical profile, which includes key bioactive compounds such as allantoin, rosmarinic acid, salvianolic acid, and choline, which collectively promote wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. It has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials in children for accelerating the healing of superficial skin abrasions.
