Symphytum officinale extract

Symphytum officinale extract is an investigational herbal topical treatment developed by the Universidade do Vale do Sapucaí for the management of plantar keratosis in diabetic patients. Derived from the comfrey plant, the extract contains bioactive compounds such as allantoin, which promotes cell proliferation and keratolysis, and rosmarinic acid, which provides anti-inflammatory effects. In a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial (NCT03447925), the extract formulated in a vaseline base demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing the area of plantar keratosis compared to standard 10% salicylic acid. The treatment is applied topically once daily and is being evaluated as a natural alternative for skin conditions associated with the diabetic foot.
