SYN-005 is a **combination of two highly synergistic humanized monoclonal antibodies (hu1B7 and hu11E6)** developed to target and neutralize the pertussis toxin produced by *Bordetella pertussis*, the causative agent of pertussis (whooping cough). The antibodies are designed to inactivate this toxin, thereby reducing or preventing the life-threatening symptoms of the disease, especially in infants and newborns, for both prophylaxis and treatment. Antibiotics typically eliminate the bacteria but do not neutralize the pertussis toxin, making SYN-005 a targeted immunotherapeutic approach. SYN-005 has shown efficacy in non-human primate studies, both therapeutically and prophylactically, and has received Orphan Drug Designation from the FDA for the treatment of pertussis. The program is developed by Synthetic Biologics in collaboration with Intrexon and academic partners from the University of Texas at Austin[1][2][3][7][11].
