Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SYN-007 is a delayed-release oral formulation of ribaxamase, a recombinant beta-lactamase enzyme developed by Synthetic Biologics (now Theriva Biologics). It is specifically designed to be co-administered with oral beta-lactam antibiotics, including those combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors like clavulanate. The enzyme acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract to degrade residual antibiotics that reach the colon, thereby protecting the commensal gut microbiome from disruption. This mechanism is intended to prevent antibiotic-associated complications such as *Clostridioides difficile* infection and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, without interfering with the systemic absorption and efficacy of the antibiotic.
