Syn-Oss is a synthetic, osteoconductive bone graft material primarily utilized in dental and maxillofacial surgery for bone regeneration and augmentation. It is composed of a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) mixture, typically containing 20% hydroxyapatite (HA) and 80% beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). This specific ratio is engineered to provide a balance between the structural stability offered by the slowly resorbing HA and the faster resorption of β-TCP, which allows for the gradual replacement of the graft by the patient's own bone. Syn-Oss is indicated for various clinical applications, including the filling of extraction sockets, sinus floor elevations, and the treatment of periodontal bone defects. It provides a porous scaffold that supports the attachment and proliferation of osteoblasts, facilitating the natural healing process.
