Overview

SYNB8802 is an investigational, orally administered Synthetic Biotic™ medicine being developed by Synlogic for the treatment of enteric hyperoxaluria (EH). [1] It is a genetically engineered, non-pathogenic strain of *Escherichia coli* Nissle designed to consume oxalate in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. [2, 4] By breaking down oxalate, SYNB8802 aims to prevent its absorption into the bloodstream, thereby lowering urinary oxalate levels and reducing the risk of kidney stone formation and progressive kidney damage associated with EH. [1, 2] The drug has demonstrated proof-of-concept by achieving clinically significant reductions in urinary oxalate in Phase 1a/b clinical trials in healthy volunteers and patients with EH, including those with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.
