Overview

Synbiotic AKSB is a novel synbiotic formulation developed by the Mayo Clinic in collaboration with Agri-King Corporation. It is designed as an adjuvant to enhance the immune response to influenza vaccination, particularly in elderly populations (aged 65 and older). The formulation consists of a combination of two probiotics—the bacterium Enterococcus faecium (SF68 or Ventrux ME 30) and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Lynside Pro-Lay 1)—and a prebiotic, fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS, NutraFlora). By modulating the gut microbiota, AKSB aims to stimulate the host's immune system to improve the efficacy of seasonal vaccines. A Phase I trial has demonstrated its safety and tolerability in healthy older adults.
