The SYNERGY Everolimus-Eluting Stent System is a drug-device combination product developed by Boston Scientific for the treatment of coronary artery disease. It features a thin-strut (74–81 μm) platinum chromium (PtCr) metal alloy stent platform with an ultrathin (4 μm) abluminal coating of everolimus and a bioresorbable poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymer. Everolimus, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, is an mTOR inhibitor that suppresses smooth muscle cell proliferation to prevent neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis. The PLGA polymer and everolimus are eluted synchronously over approximately 3 to 4 months, after which the polymer is completely absorbed, leaving behind a bare metal stent. This design aims to promote faster vascular healing and potentially allow for shorter durations of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), particularly in patients at high risk of bleeding. It was the first bioabsorbable polymer drug-eluting stent to receive FDA approval in the United States.
