Overview

Synflorix is a 10-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in which capsular polysaccharides from ten Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes are conjugated (for eight of the ten serotypes) to non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) protein D as the carrier protein, formulated as an adsorbed vaccine for intramuscular use in infants and young children. It is developed to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, and acute otitis media by inducing serotype-specific anti-pneumococcal polysaccharide antibodies and functional opsonophagocytic activity, and also elicits antibodies to protein D, a conserved surface lipoprotein of H. influenzae, which may contribute to protection against NTHi acute otitis media.[1][3][4][5] The vaccine was developed by GSK and is licensed in many countries as an alternative to other pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for routine childhood immunization programs.[1][3][4]
