Overview

Synovial membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells (SM-MSCs) are a population of multipotent progenitor cells isolated from the synovial lining of joints. They are characterized by a high chondrogenic potential, often exceeding that of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from bone marrow or adipose tissue, making them a primary candidate for cartilage regeneration and the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). These cells express standard MSC markers such as CD73, CD90, and CD105 and possess the ability to differentiate into chondrocytes, osteoblasts, and adipocytes. In therapeutic applications, SM-MSCs are typically administered via intra-articular injection to promote cartilage repair, increase the expression of type II collagen (COL-2), and modulate the inflammatory environment within the joint. Preclinical studies have demonstrated their efficacy in reducing cartilage damage and improving histopathological scores in OA models.
