Synovial tissue and fat pad stromal vascular fraction is an autologous cell therapy product under investigation for the treatment of knee articular cartilage injuries. It consists of a stromal vascular fraction (SVF) obtained through the enzymatic digestion of synovial membrane and infrapatellar (Hoffa's) fat pad tissues harvested from the patient during a single surgical procedure. This SVF contains a diverse population of regenerative cells, including mesenchymal stem cells, which are seeded onto a collagen scaffold to create a tissue-engineered construct. The construct is then implanted into the cartilage defect to facilitate tissue repair and functional recovery. The therapy is being developed by the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo.
