Overview

Synthamin 17 is a sterile, nonpyrogenic hypertonic solution containing 10.0% essential and nonessential L-amino acids, manufactured by Baxter Healthcare. It is designed for intravenous administration to provide a biologically available source of nitrogen for protein synthesis in patients requiring parenteral nutrition. The solution includes a balanced mixture of L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Lysine, L-Valine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Histidine, L-Threonine, L-Methionine, L-Tryptophan, L-Alanine, L-Arginine, Glycine, L-Proline, L-Serine, and L-Tyrosine. Beyond its standard use in nutritional support, it is being investigated in clinical trials (such as the AIRPORT trial by Alfred Health) for its potential to mitigate acute kidney injury in adult lung transplant recipients through perioperative infusion, a mechanism thought to involve the promotion of renal vasodilation and increased glomerular filtration rate.
