Overview

Synthetic CACNA2D1 protein is a recombinant version of the alpha2delta-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, currently being investigated as a potential treatment for schizophrenia. Research has shown that individuals with schizophrenia have significantly lower levels of this protein in their cerebrospinal fluid, which results in the overstimulation of brain electrical networks and contributes to cognitive deficits. The synthetic protein is designed to restore these levels and normalize neuronal excitability. In preclinical studies involving mouse models of genetic schizophrenia, a single injection of the synthetic protein into the brain corrected abnormal circuit activity and improved behavioral symptoms without causing sedation or motor impairment. This approach represents a novel tandem biomarker-peptide strategy for addressing cognitive symptoms that are typically unresponsive to standard antipsychotic medications.
