Synthetic ceramide cream is a topical formulation containing man-made (synthetic) ceramides, also known as pseudoceramides. These creams are designed to mimic the structure and function of natural skin ceramides—lipid molecules that make up about 50% of the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum). Synthetic ceramides are more stable and free from contaminants compared to natural sources[1][5]. The primary mechanism is restoration and reinforcement of the skin barrier by replenishing deficient or damaged native ceramides. This helps lock in moisture, reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), improve hydration, minimize irritation, and protect against environmental damage[1][2][3][4]. Clinical studies show that synthetic pseudoceramide creams can significantly improve symptoms in conditions like atopic dermatitis by shifting the skin’s lipid profile toward a healthy phenotype[3][5]. They may also be used for dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, sensitive or aging skin[2][6].
