Overview

Synxyrin (SNA11) is a small molecule drug developed by SyneuRx International for the treatment of refractory depression (treatment-resistant depression) and suicidal symptoms. It acts as a potent mixed agonist/antagonist (partial agonist) at the glycine binding site of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. This unique mechanism allows the drug to balance NMDA-receptor-mediated neurotransmission: it acts as an antagonist to reduce activity when the receptor is over-activated and as an agonist to increase activity when it is under-activated, targeting a 50% activity level in both scenarios. It is intended for patients with major depressive disorder who have failed to respond to at least two standard antidepressants.
