Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Syrupus Polygalae is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pharmaceutical product developed and manufactured by Shanxi Buchang Pharmaceutical. It is formulated as an oral syrup primarily indicated for the treatment of cough and respiratory conditions associated with excessive phlegm. The active ingredient is derived from the root of *Polygala tenuifolia* (Yuan Zhi), which contains triterpenoid saponins. These compounds act as expectorants by irritating the gastric mucosa, which triggers a parasympathetic reflex that increases glandular secretions in the bronchial tree. This process reduces the viscosity of mucus and facilitates its expulsion from the respiratory tract. The product is approved for marketing in China for respiratory indications.
