Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Systane Complete Preservative-Free is an over-the-counter (OTC) lubricant eye drop developed and marketed by Alcon for the temporary relief of burning and irritation associated with dry eye disease. The formulation is a preservative-free nanoemulsion that utilizes 0.6% propylene glycol as the active lubricant. It employs a proprietary nano-droplet technology incorporating mineral oil and phospholipids (specifically dimyristoyl phosphatidylglycerol) to create a uniform protective matrix across the ocular surface. This mechanism targets the lipid layer of the tear film to reduce evaporation and is indicated for aqueous-deficient, evaporative, and mixed dry eye subtypes. The product is compatible with soft contact lenses and is often used in clinical research to evaluate changes in tear film higher-order aberrations.
