Systane Free Liquid Gel

Systane Free Liquid Gel was a preservative-free ophthalmic lubricant developed by Alcon Laboratories for the relief of dry eye symptoms. Launched in January 2006, the formulation was designed to provide a high-viscosity, gel-like consistency for extended ocular surface protection without the use of traditional preservatives like benzalkonium chloride. Instead, it utilized a unique stabilization system comprising aminomethyl propanol (AMP), borate, sorbitol, and zinc. However, the product was voluntarily recalled by Alcon in December 2006 after reports of mold contamination were identified. Investigations determined that the contamination was specifically related to the interaction of the nitrogen-based compound AMP within this particular preservative-free formulation. Following the recall, the product was replaced by other formulations in the Systane line, such as those utilizing the Polyquad preservative system.
