Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Syzygium heyneanum extract (SHE) is a botanical extract derived from the plant *Syzygium heyneanum*, currently being investigated as a preclinical research compound for its potential neuroprotective effects in Parkinson's disease. Rich in antioxidant polyphenols and flavonoids, the extract has demonstrated the ability to mitigate neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in paraquat-induced rat models. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of key biomarkers associated with neurodegeneration, including the reduction of α-synuclein expression, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. While SHE shows promise in academic studies for restoring antioxidant enzyme levels and improving behavioral symptoms, it is not currently in formal pharmaceutical development by any commercial sponsor.
