SZ06819 is a first-in-class, orally bioavailable small molecule New Chemical Entity (NCE) being developed by Sarfez Pharmaceuticals. It acts as a potent and selective antagonist of the P2X3 receptor (P2X purinoceptor 3), specifically targeting the carotid body chemoreflex. The carotid body is a sensory organ that monitors blood gas levels; its over-activation is a known driver of sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, which contributes to the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), resistant hypertension (rHTN), and heart failure (HF). By modulating this reflex, SZ06819 aims to improve respiratory stability and reduce blood pressure. The program is currently in the IND-enabling stage of development.
