Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SZR104 (SZR-104) is a brain-penetrable synthetic kynurenic acid (KYNA) analog developed by the University of Szeged. Unlike endogenous kynurenic acid, which has very limited blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, SZR104 is highly permeable to the BBB due to its C-3 aminoalkylation. SZR104 acts as an agonist of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) and exhibits potent anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anticonvulsant properties. It has been shown to inhibit microglial activation, reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-alpha and IL-6), and promote the expression of anti-inflammatory markers like TSG-6. SZR104 is under preclinical investigation for the treatment of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders, including epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and other tauopathies.
