Overview

TACE + camrelizumab is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is a type of liver cancer. This treatment combines two distinct approaches: Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) and camrelizumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor. **TACE** is a minimally invasive procedure performed in interventional radiology to restrict a tumor's blood supply[5]. It involves delivering chemotherapy medicine directly to the blood vessels supplying the liver tumor using real-time image guidance and injecting small embolic particles coated with chemotherapeutic drugs selectively into an artery directly supplying the tumor[3, 5]. TACE works by interrupting the tumor's blood supply and allowing for focused administration of chemotherapy, delivering a higher dose to the tumor while reducing systemic exposure[5]. **Camrelizumab** is an immune checkpoint inhibitor administered intravenously. It works by enhancing the body's immune response against cancer cells[6]. The combination therapy involves the TACE procedure followed by camrelizumab administration, typically during the perioperative period (within 30 days) of the TACE operation[6, 8]. This combination approach has shown promising results in treating hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly for intermediate to advanced HCC, recurrent HCC after curative resection, and as a bridging therapy prior to surgery for patients with HCC[6, 8, 10]. A typical protocol includes the TACE procedure with chemotherapy and embolization, and intravenous camrelizumab every 2-3 weeks, starting within 30 days of TACE. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) may sometimes be added[6]. Clinical studies indicate effectiveness in treating HCC with high objective response rates and disease control rates in some studies[8]. Safety data suggest approximately 75% of patients may experience adverse events related to camrelizumab, but severe events are rare[10]. This therapy is an emerging approach for patients not suitable for surgery or ablation, or as a bridge to other treatments like liver transplantation or resection.
