Tachikawa electrolyzed calcium is a specialized liquid calcium preparation developed and manufactured by Morita Pharmaceutical Company. It is produced through an electrolysis process that generates highly bioavailable calcium ions from natural sources (such as oyster shells). While traditionally used as a calcium supplement and classified as a Second-class OTC drug in Japan, it is currently being investigated for its potential therapeutic effects on the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The therapeutic rationale is based on the hypothesis that stabilizing calcium homeostasis and modulating neuronal excitability can alleviate symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Clinical studies, including those conducted at Soujinkai Hospital, have utilized the Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire (NPI-Q) and the Dementia Behavior Disturbance Scale (DBD) to evaluate its efficacy.
