Overview

Tacholiquin is an inhaled mucolytic solution developed by bene-Arzneimittel GmbH for the treatment of chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The formulation consists of 1% tyloxapol, 5% glycerine, and 2% sodium hydrogen carbonate in a sterile aqueous solution. Unlike traditional pharmacological agents, Tacholiquin is classified as a Class IIa medical device because it operates through a purely physical mechanism of action; it acts as a surfactant to reduce the surface tension of mucus in the airways, thereby promoting expectoration and clearing the respiratory tract. Clinical trials have demonstrated its superiority over saline in improving sputum weight and providing symptomatic relief in patients with chronic obstructive airway diseases. It is typically administered three times daily via a nebulizer.
