Overview

Tacrolimus EMS is a generic formulation of the calcineurin inhibitor tacrolimus, developed by the Brazilian pharmaceutical company EMS. It is primarily indicated for the prevention of organ rejection in patients undergoing kidney transplantation. As a small molecule immunosuppressant, it works by binding to the FK506-binding protein (FKBP12), forming a complex that inhibits calcineurin. This inhibition prevents the dephosphorylation of the nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT), thereby blocking the transcription of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and other cytokines essential for T-cell activation and proliferation. Tacrolimus EMS was evaluated in a Phase 3 randomized non-inferiority trial comparing its safety and efficacy to the reference brand Prograf in renal transplant recipients, demonstrating its role as a cost-effective alternative for maintaining immunosuppression in post-transplant care.
