Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tacrolimus Ointment 0.1% "Iwaki" is a topical generic immunosuppressant developed and manufactured by Iwaki Seiyaku. It contains tacrolimus hydrate, a macrolide immunosuppressant originally derived from *Streptomyces tsukubaensis*. The drug is approved in Japan for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in adults. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the intracellular protein FKBP12, forming a complex that inhibits calcineurin. This inhibition prevents the dephosphorylation of the nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT), thereby suppressing T-cell activation and the production of inflammatory cytokines. As a generic formulation, its reference brand is Protopic.
